DO COOKIES TRACK EVERYTHING I DO ONLINE? Are they dangerous?
In the article below WM Tech Support explains what cookies are used for, whether they are a threat, and how they get onto your computer in the first place!
Also see our
forum for more information, or
contact us for help with a specific problem.
Since cookies first appeared internet users have been worried that these cookies would track their every move whilst online.
Wrong!
Cookies can only perform a limited amount of tracking when you are browsing through Web pages, even the most persistent of cookies can just trace your movements from site to site. For instance, common cookies from the DoubleClick company track your surfing to make sure that you don't see the same advertisements over and over.
Most cookies are far less intrusive, a cookie used by an everyday site such as boots.com or amazon.com is simply to personalize the Web site (welcome messages at the top of the screen, your favourite products on the homepage etc...); these types of cookie do not track your internet movements.
Our own website's cookie is installed if you choose for the forum to "remember me", the cookie will remember your details in order that you do not have to log in on your own pc. If you delete your cookies at any point, you will notice that our website no longer remembers you and asks for you to log in.
If you're worried about your computer storing cookies then you can turn them off in your browser (although doing so will render many sites, especially shopping sites, virtually unsurfable).
To do this in Internet Explorer choose 'Tools' 'Internet Options' then click the 'Privacy' tab. If you now click Advanced you will be able to override automatic cookie handling settings.
