Sony Playstation 3 -VS- Nintendo Wii

Here we have a review that's probably on
everyone's mind, read this review and you'll
know precisely who we think would win in a
battle between the PS3 and the Wii.

Both consoles were unveiled in September 2005 at the Tokyo Game Show but were released to different countries at various different times/dates over the last 2 years and have made a vast impact to gamers life's across the globe but what do they offer to separate these two machines and put them in a head to head battle fighting to be number 1?

Worldwide sales since the console's release dates show that the Wii has topped the PS3 by over 10 million consoles. The figures below show PS3 details as of April 21st 2008 and Wii details as of March 31st 2008 (nb. this means that the PS3 had almost an entire extra month in sales and still hasn't managed to pull itself in front.

WM Tech Support investigate why.

                   Sales                                                      Price

Could it have something to do with the price difference between the two?

The current U.K. price (April 2008) shows that PS3 stands at approximately £299 where the Wii is selling at a much lower price, approximately £179. This could have a big difference where sales are concerned but what you get for your money puts a whole different spin on things as the following information proves…

PS3 Features

  • 40-80gb Hard Drive (UK/PAL Versions)
  • 2-4 USB 2.0 ports (depending on size of hard drive)
  • 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi
  • Flash Card Reader on 60GB hard drives onwards
  • 2x Speed Blu-Ray disc drive for games/movies
  • User upgradeable 2.5" SATA hard drive
  • HDMI 1.3a built on all models
  • 256MB of XDR main memory
  • 256MB of GDDR3 video memory

PS3 Accessories

  • Wireless six axis controller
  • Dual-shock 3 controller
  • BD remote
  • Optional Playstation eye camera
  • Optional PlayTV DVB-T tuner/digital video recorder (coming soon)

Wii Features

  • 512MB built in NAND flash memory
  • Expandable storage available via SD card Memory
  • Game cube Compatible
  • Game cube memory card needed for game saves
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi
  • 88MB Main Memory (24MB internal IT-SRAM integrated in to graphics package, 64 MB external GDDR3 SDRAM )
  • 3MB embedded GPU texture memory and frame buffer
  • Wireless connectivity to Nintendo DS's with no extra accessories

Wii Accessories

  • Wireless Standard Remote
  • Optional wireless USB keyboard
  • Optional Accessories available such as wireless golf club, fishing rod, light sabre and many more.

From simply comparing the features and accessories we can see why there is such a difference in the retail price of the consoles - there is a massive difference in specifications.

The selling price of both these consoles is very reasonable however, in my opinion, the PS3 offers a lot more for your money than the Wii. Not only are you getting a games console offering HDMI & Blu-ray quality but you're getting a built-in Blu-ray DVD player too (which alone to purchase in the U.K. will set you back upwards of £299).

WINNER = PS3
